BUT WE WERE CURIOUS
We were curious in the run up was to Valentine Day how the whole tradition came about. As an internationally-celebrated day, it must have a good back story, no? Well that’s what we wanted to know, so we went looking…
In the Third century, When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men would make better soldiers than husbands and fathers, he outlawed marriage for all young men.
Valentine, a roman priest, realised the injustice of Claudius’ actions and defied him. He continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.
Valentine was caught, and put to death by Claudius, and so, for dying in the name of love, his tale stuck.
It made him a legend that needed to be celebrated, a day for romantic gifts of designer jewellery and engagement rings.
After all, do they not say that love makes the world go round?
That’s one theory anyway…
And that’s not all…
